Alcohol Swabs

Alcohol swabs are an important part of diabetes care. When you are injecting insulin using a syringe, you should always have some on hand to ensure that you've properly sterilized the injection site. American Diabetes Services, the nation's leading diabetic supply company, has compiled some basic instructions for injecting insulin.

American Diabetes Services is the nation's leading diabetic supply company and helps thousands of diabetics care for their diabetes effectively and at a reasonable price. You may not know this, but Medicare and many private insurance companies will pay for your diabetic supplies. Fill our form to find out if you're eligible for free diabetic supplies.

Injecting Insulin
Before injecting insulin, you should thoroughly wash and dry your hands. Then mix insulin by gently rolling the bottle between your palms. Clean the cap of the insulin bottle with alcohol swabs. Pull air into the insulin syringe to the number of units needed for the injection and inject the air into the bottle. Draw the insulin into the syringe. Make sure before you remove the syringe that you have the proper insulin dosage and that there are no air bubbles in the syringe.

Choose an injection site, such as the abdomen, thighs, arm, or buttocks. Wipe the skin clean with alcohol swabs, making sure the injection site is sterilized. Pinch the skin up in a fold. Dart needle into skin at 90 degree angle so it goes straight into the skin, making sure to inject into the fatty tissue, not muscle. Pull out the syringe needle out and hold alcohol swabs over injection site till no bleeding occurs.

This is only a guideline for injecting insulin. Please consult with a health care provider for further instructions on injecting insulin.
