The Effect of Cinnamon on Blood Sugar

Q. Is it true that cinnamon can help lower blood sugar levels?

A: According to a study published in Diabetes Care in 2003, 60 people with Type 2 diabetes who consumed a particular dose of cassia cinnamon for 40 days showed marked improvement in blood sugar, as well as lower triglyceride levels and lower levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol.

If you want to try adding cinnamon to your daily diet, use 1/2 teaspoon or more per day. You can add it foods such as applesauce, oatmeal or yogurt, or to beverages such as tea, smoothies or coffee. However, you should check your blood sugar levels more often for the first 4 to 6 weeks, as cinnamon could increase the risk of low blood sugar reactions in those who take insulin or certain diabetes medications. And be sure to tell your doctor about the addition to your diet, as he or she should always be aware of any changes to your diabetes regimen.
