Eating Sugar

Q. Can I eat foods with sugar in them?
Gabby Swanson, Lake Charles, LA

A. For almost every person with diabetes, the answer is yes! Eating a piece of cake made with sugar will raise your blood glucose level. So will eating corn on the cob, a tomato sandwich, or lima beans.
As with other indulgences, the rule regarding sugary foods is moderation and portion control. If you eat too much sugar, your blood glucose level will increase too much. You might fill up, but without the nutrients of healthier foods such as vegetables and grains, you'll soon feel hungry again. Not to mention you'll gain weight.
So, you don't have to pass up that slice of birthday cake. Just eat a little less bread or potato, and replace it with the cake. And be sure to get some exercise to burn off the calories that came with the cake.
