Diabetes and Cholesterol

Q. Why should I be concerned about my cholesterol levels?
Candace M., Clarksdale, MS

A. If you have diabetes, you have a higher risk of suffering a heart attack and stroke than someone without diabetes. High levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides and low levels of good cholesterol (HDL) are risk factors for heart disease that are common among people with diabetes. Because these can lead to heart disease, it's important to watch your cholesterol intake to lower your risk. You should follow a diet that is low in saturated and trans fat, as well as high in fiber. You should also exercise daily for at least 30 minutes.
