Preventing Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Q. How can I prevent diabetic foot ulcers from developing?
Robin Feller, Palm City, FL

A: Foot sores and ulcers are a common complication of Diabetes. That's because diabetics are especially prone to decreased sensation in the feet and impaired wound healing. To prevent dangerous ulcers from forming, you should examine your feet on a daily basis. Look for any signs of redness, swelling, or small cuts. Check in between toes and use a mirror to check the bottom of your feet. Keep your toe nails trimmed, and be sure to trim them straight across to prevent ingrown nails.
A podiatrist is a health care professional who should be part of your diabetic care team. Let your podiatrist treat any corns or bunions; do not treat them yourself. You should also keep your feet dry and never walk barefoot. If you see any suspicious areas, contact your podiatrist immediately.
