Blood Sugar after Gestational Diabetes

Q. I had gestational Diabetes. How soon after having the baby should I get my blood sugar level rechecked?
Tamara Nasef, Leesburg, FL

A. Gestational Diabetes is a complication of pregnancy, occurring in a small percentage of expectant mothers, that usually goes away after the baby is born. You should have your doctor recheck your blood sugar level about 6 to 8 weeks after delivery. For approximately 90% of women with gestational Diabetes, blood sugar levels return to normal right after your baby is born. However, you are at increased risk of developing type 2 Diabetes. In fact, 5% of women with gestational Diabetes will develop Type 2 Diabetes and 15% will have pre-Diabetes by the time they are screened following childbirth.
