Low Blood Sugar While Exercising

Q. When I exercise, my blood sugar tends to drop. What can I do to avoid this?
Rosendo Olmeda, Citrus Springs, FL

A. If low blood sugar interrupts your exercise routine, try eating a snack before you exercise or adjusting your medication. If you notice symptoms such as hunger, nervousness, shakiness, or excess sweating while you exercise, check your blood sugar. If your blood sugar is 70 or below, take 2 to 5 glucose tablets or drink ½ cup (4 ounces) of fruit juice or regular soft drink to raise your blood sugar. After 15 minutes, check your blood sugar again. If it's still below 70, repeat these steps until your blood sugar has increased to at least 70.
